At Duncree we believe in raising our Shetlands in the most natural environment possible. The herd environment provides security and social structure for all the ponies. It is not unusual to find one the dry mares or geldings standing watch over the sleeping foals. It is a genuine thrill to watch the ponies run and play together . It also helps keep them physically and emotionally fit. At present the herd consists of about 40 ponies ranging from foals to retired broodmares in their mid 20's.

Their pasture is a mix of grasses and other plants such as plantain and chicory. Hay is sourced from different locations to give nutritional variety.

We have found that this holistic approach:

  • good hoof care
  • living in a herd situation with plenty of room to move
  • proper nutrition

has improved the overall performance of our ponies.
